Windscribe VPN is a privacy-focused VPN app for iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple TV, built by Windscribe Limited, an independently owned company founded in 2016 and based in Toronto, Canada. Windscribe encrypts your traffic, replaces your IP address with one from 69+ countries, and unblocks sites and streaming libraries restricted in your region.
WHO WINDSCRIBE IS FOR
• Travellers who need a home-country IP abroad, or a US IP from anywhere.
• Anyone using public Wi-Fi in airports, hotels or cafes.
• Streamers who want Netflix, Disney+, Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, HBO Max, Peacock, Paramount+, ESPN+, Sling TV, BBC iPlayer, DAZN and FuboTV from other countries.
• Students and staff on restrictive networks, where Stealth and Wstunnel work when standard VPN traffic is blocked.
• People who want a free VPN with no credit card, no ads and no email required to sign up.
FREE VS PRO
Starter (free): 10 GB of data per month and servers in 10 countries (US, Canada, UK, France, Germany, Netherlands, Switzerland, Norway, Romania and Hong Kong), with AES-256 encryption, kill switch and the full ad and tracker blocker. No credit card. No ads. No email required. P2P and port forwarding are not included.
Pro (paid): unlimited data, 69+ countries, P2P file sharing without throttling, and port forwarding for game servers and remote device access.
TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS
• Protocols: WireGuard, OpenVPN UDP, OpenVPN TCP, IKEv2, Stealth, Wstunnel.
• Encryption: AES-256 with Perfect Forward Secrecy. Post-quantum encryption on WireGuard protects today's traffic from future decryption.
• 10 Gbps server ports for 4K streaming, large downloads and low-latency gaming.
• DNS leak protection and an always-on kill switch that cuts all traffic if the tunnel drops.
• R.O.B.E.R.T.: a configurable DNS-level blocker for ads, trackers, malware and phishing domains.
• Speed: TechRadar's April 2026 tests ranked Windscribe the fastest free VPN (1,594 Mbps on WireGuard) and third fastest paid VPN overall (2,263 Mbps).
WHAT WINDSCRIBE STORES
Windscribe does not log your IP address, browsing history, DNS queries, connection timestamps or traffic. It stores three non-identifying data points: date last used, bandwidth used in the last 30 days, and activated app versions.
INDEPENDENT VERIFICATION
• Court-tested: on 11 April 2025 a court in Athens, Greece dismissed criminal charges against Windscribe co-founder Yegor Sak. Windscribe had no user data to hand over; the no-logs policy held as a legal defence.
• Infrastructure audit: PacketLabs audited the server stack in June 2024, covering 20 repositories and roughly 80,000 lines of code, plus pen testing.
• Open source: the full iOS app source code is published at github.com/Windscribe/iOS-App.
• Transparency report: every DMCA and law enforcement request is published in real time.
• PCMag Editors' Choice, rated 4.5 out of 5, August 2025.
