Take any set of notes that sit side by side on the circle of fifths. Collect every one of those sets, and they self-organize into a 12-row object - 67 sounds, arranged from simple to complex and from dark to bright.
That's The Color Tree, discovered by Andrew Sheron in 2021. Many common scales and chords you already know appear here, along with many you might not recognize. Tap any sound to hear it and visualize it.
Key Features:
• Completely free - no ads, no account
• Listen - customizable playback for every sound on the object
• Scale visualizer - see the notes laid out on your instrument of choice
• Fully offline - no connection required
• Deep links to The Color Encyclopedia - jump to the full entry for any sound
For composers, improvisers, music theorists, and anyone else with curious ears.
The Color Tree maps the 12 special cases. The Color Encyclopedia contains the entire space - all 351 families of notes in twelve-tone music.
